Minutes of February 8, 2012 Meeting

We were back at our regular digs, upstairs at G&G's that night. Martin Hochhauser called the meeting to order by
intoning a series of percussive taps on the traditional empty water glass. Thus, having gained our attention, Martin called on our president Dan Ashley to introduce the evening's speaker; Dr. Lawrence Fox an ophthalmologist associated with the Central New York Eye Physicians Center that treats eye disorders at their offices in Poughkeepsie and Fishkill. Dr. Fox
has a B.A. from Hofstra and an M.D. from Downstate Medical Center of S.U.N.Y. He joined Central New York Eye Physicians in 1987 after being the Chief Resident at Nassau County Medical Center. He has performed thousands of  Microsurgical procedures, specializing in cataract surgery. Thus, he was well equipped to answer any questions we might have concerning this condition that becomes more common as we age.

Cataract surgery has evolved significantly over the past decade, he said.  Currently, cataract surgery is a relatively safe procedure which involves no sutures and employs a smaller incision resulting in less complication than previously. Dr. Fox also broached the topics of refractive surgery that treats near and farsightedness as well as the topic of lens implants. We thanked Dr. Fox for enlightening us with the breadth of his knowledge on this fascinating topic and presented him with one of our traditional coffee mugs. We then asked the doctor if he could make out who it was on the vessel's exterior.
